It’s officially fall. In Nebraska, this means cooler temperatures, farm fresh apples, pumpkins, and preparing for our annual Halloween shindig. I love fall!

The cooler temperatures also are perfect for cuddling. Did you know that 30 seconds of hug time raises oxytocin levels in both men and women? Oxytocin, a neurotransmitter, is linked to “a sense of emotional intimacy, relaxation, attachment and bonding, contentment, and trust,” according to Dr. Ian Kerner. He’s the co-author of “The Big, Fun, Sexy Sex book.”

If you’re a gardener (or, even if you’re not), it’s time to harvest a little fun with your road warrior!

Your assignment is this: Arrange a secret date/get-away. Be clever. It doesn’t have to cost any money. Send a note to your road warrior to meet you at a specific time and place. Create several sheets of paper with secret desires, wishes, or directions written on them. Be sure to include things you know you’re road warrior enjoys. Put the sheets into a small satin or plush draw-string bag. They don’t have to all be sexual. For example, one could be “feed me chocolate-covered strawberries.” Another might be, “read me a sonnet.” Take turns reaching into the bag and surprising each other.

Words of caution: While you’re hangin’ with your honey, don’t talk about bills, the kids, or your pets. Don’t talk about your goals. Stay in the moment. For us women, this can be a challenge! If you have children, satisfy your need to know that they are in good hands, and move on. Guys, if your wife is the road warrior, pack some fun stuff, and remember that she may need to know that the kids are safe. Allow for warming up time. Women don’t generally shut down their brains that quickly. If we can hear/emotionally feel our children, that’s where our primary sex organ is. You don’t want that. (Oh, and for those who aren’t clear about this, our primary sex organ is our brain! This is true for both genders.)

That’s it! October is the perfect time to harvest a little one-to-one time before the holiday season gets a firm grip on us. Go have fun!
